Studio Portrait
The lighting in the fourth image is bright on the right side of his face and casts a shadow onto the left. The lighting isn't too bright so that is makes his face white but it's also not too dark so that you can't see it.The photo is a head shot from the shoulders up. The model is centered in the middle of the composition. He is looking down and off to the side. The image is vertical and taken from a direct point of view. The models facial expression is sad and the lighting is also dull which creates a gloomy feel. This image compared to the third image is a lot different. The mood of the third image is joyful and happy and the lighting is a lot brighter. Also, there are no shadows and there is a black backdrop which make it feel like it could be a magazine cover while the other image could be in a gallery.
Self Portrait
For my self portrait I took multiple pictures of my feet. To create these pictures I took them by looking straight down. I also tried to take them all in the same position. My first image was taken at a beach in Australia, the second was when I went on a run, and the last was taken before I went to a concert. I chose to take pictures of my feet because I felt like a persons shoes can tell you a lot about them. I think my pictures as a collection are successful but by themselves they aren't as complete.
Family Portrait
For this assignment I photographed my sister. I took these pictures of her purposely looking away and having her back turned to the camera because it makes the viewer question who she is. These pictures show her personality because she has a lot of talents that you wouldn't know of unless you get to know her. In my third image I took the shot from far away, I also knelt down and positioned my camera close to the ground. The river in the background and the black and white effect gives the image an old fashioned feeling. I think what makes this image successful is how I positioned my sister to the left of the frame. I like how this looks because it creates a lot of negative space to the right and makes her look secluded.
Photo Emulation
About the Photographer
Cig Harvey is a portrait photographer from Maine. She was an assistant professor at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University for ten years and had her first solo museum show in 2012. Cig is an artist and devotes her life to creating things. She mainly photographs family or herself and most of her work is done in Bermuda, Maine, and Massachusetts. I chose to recreate her work because I really liked her self portrait of herself on a roof top looking into the sky. I like her work because it tells a story and keeps you interested.
To emulate "The Dying Plant" photo I focused on centering a chair and my sister in the middle of the composition. Also, I used bright lighting and had my sister hold a plant out in front of her. The picture I took is asymmetrically balanced and does not follow the rule of thirds. The main focal point is the chair because it is in focus while everything else is out of focus. By having the chair upfront and in focus a sense of depth has been created. I think that the point of view is unusual because my sister is sitting down in front of a chair with no table between her, so it is kind of unexpected. Many aspects of my photo is different than the original. I tried to make my photo as different as I could while still trying to make it recognizable to the original.
